HDSA Connect

Your Connection to Someone who Understands

Overview

HDSA has identified the need for a peer to peer volunteer program to address the needs of those who have undergone predictive testing for Huntington’s Disease and received a positive test result.

While the physician and other healthcare professionals are important to an individual’s care and treatment, supportive peer volunteers can play a vital role in caring for the psychosocial needs of the newly-tested individual.  Each conversation will be facilitated by a licensed social worker, who acts as a resource and a source of support for both the Client and Volunteer.

This program is not designed to offer medical advice or to create an on-going relationship.  It is intended to be a one-time conversation, which will provide the participant with support from a person who has previously undergone predictive testing and can offer understanding about how the person may be feeling.

HDSA Connect Goals

HDSA Connect aims to provide support to persons who have tested gene positive for HD, and to teach peer volunteers how to be effective mentors. The goal of the program is to provide hope and to connect persons who have recently tested positive to individual peer support volunteers. Each call is facilitated by a licensed social worker, to ensure that the experience is a positive one for everyone involved.
